How To Trim Those Nails
« on: October 05, 2006, 12:10:48 PM »

Here is a very good site with pictures and detailed directions on trimming a dog's nails.

From the website of
Washington State University
College of Veterinary Medicine

Click on the link below to read the full article.
http://www.vetmed.wsu.edu/ClientED/dog_nails.asp

this article shows which side of the clippers face you -- which side face the dog

and even what the inside of the nail looks like so you know when to stop cutting

The article talks about the two most common type of nail clippers, how to hold them, and when to use which style. It shows the angle a correctly cut nail should be and how to position the dog for a trim. Many very good pictures and helpful hints.

Photographs by Henry Moore

I highly recommend this article to anyone who cuts their own dog's nails.

I wish they made an itty-bitty version of that for clipping bird toenails. Mine don't need clipping very often (maybe once or twice a year) and the claw scissors used for bird nails are difficult to use with a wiggly bird.
