The following are some basics for taking good pictures:

Lighting is needed for pictures to turn out well outside.

You want to have the sun behind the photographer like in this picture,

Sun in front of the photographer causes shadows across the front of the subject of your picture like this one,

Sometimes too much sun can cause a picture to appear washed out:

Not enough sun can make a picture hard to see:
